If momentum counts for anything, Milton's midget girls basketball team has to like its chances for this weekend's OBA Division 6 championships in London.
Distancing themselves from some inconsistent play this season, the Madd Dawgs fortified their efforts to capture the Guelph CYO title recently -- winning four of five games for their first tournament triumph.
Especially encouraging was the local cagers' composure, which allowed them to rally from some sizable deficits -- including one in the championship against the Dunday Dynamo.
Down 22-14 at the half, the Madd Dawgs made some key defensive adjustments that were just the ticket, as they neutralized Dunday's top scorer and went on to prevail 48-34.
Tori Pickering stood out on defence, while a balanced attack saw half-a-dozen different Milton players contribute at least six points to the title triumph. Lauren Furik led with 10, thanks to some key steals.
The Madd Dawgs' comeback efforts were even more impressive in first-round play, when they battled back from a 24-12 half-time deficit to edge the Oakville Vytis 41-39.
Devan O'Connor's 16-foot jump shot with just 12 seconds remaining -- to highlight a 10-point game -- clinched the nail-biter. Alex Schroder chipped in eight points.
From there Milton split its last two round robin games -- getting nipped by Brockville 52-49 and then thrashing Etobicoke 63-18 -- before upstaging Wallaceburg 45-42 in the semis.
O'Connor and Schroder each had 10 points while Taylor Burners did a great job running the offence and Furik and Catharine Manning combined to minimize Wallaceburg's production.
