Both the atoms and novices reigned supreme at the Niagara Falls Championship Cup Tournament last weekend -- not only capturing matching titles, but doing so in dominant fashion.

Victory was particularly sweet for the atoms, who've made vast improvement over an extremely tough 2006/07 campaign -- cutting their goals against by more than half -- and parlayed that progress into their first tournament win.

Impressive at both ends during their 4-0 March Break run, the elder Winterhawks outscored their collective opposition 29-6 and got at least one point from all 15 players.

Nine of them reached the score-sheet three or more times.

A Ryan McDonald hat-trick and four-point performance from weekend standout Austin Spiegelhalter -- who finished with an overall nine goals and four assists -- powered the atoms to a 6-3 championship decision over New Jersey's Hollydell Hurricanes.

The Winterhawks pretty much steam-rolled their way to the final, with a second-round 3-1 triumph over the Perinton Blades -- in which Spiegelhalter delivered his second straight hat-trick -- representing their only real test.

This was sandwiched with 12-0 and 11-2 blowouts over Competitive Edge and the Old York Raiders respectively.

McDonald enjoyed the second biggest slice of the scoring pie with five goals and five assists, while collective eight points each were Trevor Murphy (5g, 3a), Kyle Hajekerou (3g, 5a) and Ryan Murphy (3g, 5a).

Derek Ford and Matt Whetham split the cage work in top-notch form, closing things out with a combined goals-against average of just 1.5.

Rounding out the atom champs were Bailey Brown, Liam Buckley, Peter Carusi, Will Duggan, Owen Ellsmere, Liam Healy, Max Hewitson, Montana Kingsbury, Katriona McNeilly and Colin Moffat.

Even more stingy between the pipes, tandem partners Bobby Barrett and Christian Propp gave up a mere four goals over their novices' 4-0 run -- and each earned a shutout.

Propp's came in the championship, where after a couple of lopsided wins the novices once again faced the Buffalo Regals -- who'd pushed them to the limit in a 3-2 final.

Stepping things up for the high-stakes rematch, the Winterhawks struck early and then scored two goals within two minutes in the second en route to a 4-0 triumph.

Dan Duggan tallied twice, while Callum MacGregor capped a 14-point weekend (8g, 6a) with a goal and an assist. Also scoring in the title showdown was Marcus Mlinarevic -- one of nine novices who had three points or more in Niagara Falls.

All 14 players contributed on the score-sheet, offering as balanced a tournament win as their older counterparts.

And much like the atoms, the novices enjoyed their fair share of dominance along the way -- disposing of Competitive Edge 9-2 and thrashing the Arctic Foxes 11-0.

Bobby Barrett was in net for the lopsided shutout, while he and Propp shared the cage work in the first two games.

Duggan (5g, 3a) and Scott Harris (2g, 5a) were the other bright spots up front.

Making up the rest of the novice winners were Peter Chiappino, Oscar Fisher, Felix Gravel, Michael Hasselfeldt, Miles Jackson, Ross Matthew, Matthew Moore, Daniel Mironoff, Conner Simon and Justin Whetham.
