Rural road projects in works for summer

The Town is investing close to $3 million in two rural road construction projects slated to get underway this summer.

At its meeting Monday night, town council endorsed plans to replace the Barnstable Bridge on Lower Base Line between Fifth and Sixth lines and reconstruct the Fourth Line of Nassagaweya from No. 10 Sideroad to No. 15 Sideroad.

The bridge is currently a single-lane structure with a seven-tonne load restriction. The new structure will carry two lanes of traffic without load restrictions.

The replacement is expected to cost more than $2 million, which is offset by the $1.4 million in funding the Town received from the provincial and federal governments. It's hoped that work on the bridge will start this summer.

The Fourth Line project will see the section of road reconstructed and paved. The budget for the work, which is supposed to get underway by July, is $900,000.
